Mud Fever (Mud Rash) Tips for Horses and Ponies

24 Mud Fever Tips

  1. We used to coat my pony’s feet in Vaseline – it helped soften the scabs and kept the mud off. (Sian HorsePhotographer Lewis)
  2. Liquid paraffin is the best way to clear it up and the base of most mud Fever products. Use it neat twice a day. (Jennie Dean)
  3. Sudocreme is the best I find. (Molly Edwards, Victoria Ann Goodger)
  4. Aloe Vera gel works best! It actually gets rid of it rather than keeping the moisture in the scabs. I found that a few days off the mud with Aloe Vera gel cleared it, then once cleared I put protection plus on as a barrier to keep the mud off. (Louise Casey)
  5. Rosemary and sulpher cream and then Vaseline while getting rid of it and then when its all gone, baby oil and vinegar mixed up in a spray bottle to keep it off or pig oil. (Jordan Evans)

  8. My horse got mud fever and I tried everything! Eventually the only thing that worked was zinc ointment twice a day. Before you apply it just brush the area DO NOT WASH! Try to keep it as dry as possible. (Michelle Ann Bailey)
  9. Keep it dry and eventually it will scab over but don’t wash it though, make sure that all the mud is kept off in the future. (Lucy Ridley)
  10. Go to this man Michael Lynch’s Facebook page he makes these creams and they are amazing. I have used them on my horse and on Pedigree sheep – OrlDen Herbal Cream. He is from Northern Ireland. (Alison McCrabbe)
  11. Pig oil as it will help to heal while keeping skin supple. It promotes hair growth and it helps against feather mite/lice. (Sonia Withers)
  12. You can’t ever get rid of mud fever, you can only keep it at bay. I’ve got a Welsh D and she gets it all the time. Sudocreme is the best but you can’t bandage over the Sudocreme. (Sasha Louise Shipley)
  13. Stableline Mud and Rain Salve is awesome. I’m currently using it on my mare and it’s a God send. (Staceyrose Nunn)
  14. Naf Mud Guard supplement works our mare and she never gets it when on this. (Deborah Brassington)
  15. We had a pony with mud fever/mites/scaly skin and it took us 6 months to get rid of. We tried everything from intervectim injections, DSMO applications etc, about 3 different remedies from the vet. In the end what worked was to wash his legs very clean with warm water, good antifungal shampoo, disinfect with good strong disinfectant from vet…or hibiscrub would do. Towel dry with dry towels. Smear Sudocreme thickly on. If lots of scabs and sores then clingfilm and bandage on top overnight. In the morning the scabs are gone and the Sudocreme keeps mites away and acts as a barrier. You need to really keep them in then till it has healed completely. We put ours out in bandages a bit as he didn’t take them off. Once cleared it’s easy to manage but it can be a nightmare to clear in the first place. (Zara Stassin)
  16. Hibiscrub in warm water, clean and dry. Add Sudocreme and repeat until the mud fever goes! (Emily Rice)
  17. BETEDINE! Use your hands and rub the Betedine on it everyday then wash it off and rap the leg. (Rachael Klein)
  18. I put botanica cream on my mare. I washed with their wash and put cream on. It was gone in 2 days. I also did Kinesiology on it just to help the healing process. (Equine Kinesiology Ireland Cavan)
  19. Wash and clean until the scabs are gone and then keep dry as possible! If turned out then smear Equicreme on or Sudocreme or whatever remedy you feel works best and doesn’t affect the horse. As long as the scabs come off and it then dries up it heals fast enough but nothing works better than time too. (Yaz Bickerdike)
  20. Wash with iodine. (Ilene Roberts)
  21. Cows udder cream, it stays on my hunter out in the field. (Tracie SimpsonMitchell)
